Apple
Apple is one of the most popular companies today. They introduced many revolutionary products like the MacBook, iPod, and iPhone.
Chapter 1: 1970’s-1980’s
Apple was founded in 1976 in Los Altos, California by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Back then, Apple was called “ Apple Computers Inc.” In early years, Apple introduced The Apple 1 series, the Apple 2 series, the Apple 3 series as well as the Macintosh.
Apple I was Apple’s first computer. It was introduced in 1976. It was one of the first personal computers. It did not have a screen, and it didn’t have a case either. It started at US$666 (equivalent to $3,175 in 2021). It was discontinued in 1977, a year after its release.
Apple II was Apple’s second computer. It was released in 1977. This time, the computer included a monitor. It started at US$1,298 (equivalent to $5,800 in 2021). It sold 4.8 million units and it was discontinued 2 years after its release. Apple introduced a plus version of the apple II
Apple III was Apple’s third computer. It was released in 1980. It started at US$4,340 – $7,800 (equivalent to $14,270 – $25,650 in 2021) It was discontinued in 1984, four years after its release. Apple also introduced a III plus as well. The apple III ran an operating system called Apple SOS ( Pronounced: Apple Sauce)
These were what Apple introduced apart from the Macintosh in these two decades. The Apple I was one of the first personal computers. Before Apple I, computers were massive and they took up a lot of space. For instance, early mainframe computers took about 2,000 to 10,000 square feet. They were also very expensive. Therefore, only businesses could afford them. Not many homes had a computer until Apple released the Apple I.
Chapter 2: 1990’s
Apple introduced the PowerBook, iMac, iBook and changed the tech industry by introducing new features that later became industry standard.
PowerBook
Apple introduced the 100 series of PowerBook in 1991 with a lineup of three different laptops – the PowerBook 100, the low end computer, the PowerBook 140, the mid range computer, and the PowerBook 170, the high end computer. They introduced many more computers for the 100 series like the 145, 160, and 180. In 1992, Apple introduced the PowerBook Duo. It was a hybrid computer which could be used as a laptop and a desktop computer. In 1994, Apple introduced the 500 series. It was completely redesigned. The PowerBook G3, in 1998, had thinner bezels than its predecessor. The PowerBook G4 was introduced in 2001. It was redesigned with even thinner bezels. It was discontinued with the introduction of the MacBook Pro in 2006.
The iMac was introduced in 1998. The first Model, the iMac G3 was 43.5cm thick. It weighed 15.7 kg and had a 15 inch display. In 2002, Apple introduced the iMac G4. It had a 15 inch display and was 26.5cm thick. It weighed 9.6 kg. The iMac G5 was introduced in 2004. It had a 17 inch display. It was 17.3 cm thick and weighed 8.4 kg. In 2006, Apple introduced the Polycarbonate Intel iMac. It had the same display size and thickness, but weighed 7 kg. In 2007, Apple introduced the Aluminum iMac. It was 18.9 cm thick. It weighed 9.1 kg and had a 20 inch display. In 2009, Apple introduced the Unibody iMac. It was 18.85 cm and weighed 9.3 kg with a 21.5 inch display. In 2012 Apple introduced the Slim iMac. It was 17.5 cm thick and weighed 5.68kg. It had a 21.5 inch display. The Retina iMac was pretty similar to the Slim iMac. The Apple Silicon iMac was introduced in 2021. It had a 24 inch display and was 14.7 cm thick. It weighed 4.48kg.
An iBook is a super low end PowerBook. It was introduced in 1999. There were three types of iBooks. The G3( Clamshell), G3 Dual USB (Snow), and G4 (Snow). There were many color options. The PowerBook was more powerful and most people agree, it was better. It had a lifespan of 7 years and was discontinued in 2006 with the introduction of the MacBook.
Apple introduced the PowerBook, iMac, and iBook. These changed the tech industry. Some products are still being made today. They have been around for more than 20 years.
Chapter 3: 2000’s
In 2001, Apple introduced the iPod with the marketing message of “ A thousand songs in your pocket.” In 2006, Apple introduced the MacBook. “So the new MacBook Pro is the fastest Mac notebook ever, obviously,” said Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple at that time. He also said “It’s also the thinnest. It’s an inch thin and it’s even a hair thinner than the 17-inch PowerBook.” In 2007 Apple introduced the iPhone. Steve Jobs said “ An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator… These are NOT three separate devices! And we are calling it iPhone! Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone. And here it is.” “iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone.” It was the first multi touch phone. In 2008, Apple introduced the MacBook Air. “It’s the world’s thinnest notebook.”
iPod Classic
The iPod Classic was introduced in 2001. The first generation had a scroll wheel that turned. The second generation was introduced in 2002 and had a touch wheel that physically didn’t turn. The third generation was introduced in 2003. It had the controls in one row below the screen. In 2004, the fourth generation combined the buttons with the touch wheel. In 2005, the iPod with a color display was introduced. Also, in the same year, the iPod fifth generation was released. It was able to display videos. The other three later iPod models were similar to the fifth generation, just having the option of more storage. It was discontinued in 2014.
iPod Mini and iPod Nano
The iPod Mini came out in 2004. It was a smaller iPod. It had 5 color options. In 2005, the second generation iPod mini was released. It had only 4 color options. It was discontinued in 2005 and was replaced with the iPod Nano. The iPod Nano was smaller than the iPod Mini. It only had 2 color options. The second generation had 4 color options. It was smaller than the first generation iPod Nano. The third generation had a wider screen, was able to play video, and came in 5 colors. The fourth generation iPod had a taller screen. The fifth generation had a tall screen compared to its predecessor. Its successor looked like an apple watch. It had a multitouch display. The seventh generation iPod Nano was like a very small phone. The iPod Nano was discontinued in 2017.
iPod Shuffle and iPod Touch
The iPod Shuffle was introduced in 2015. The first gen looked like a remote. The second generation looked like a long watch. The third generation was the only buttonless iPod ever. The fourth generation looked like the second generation, but smaller. The iPod Shuffle was discontinued in 2017. The iPod touch was introduced in 2007. It was basically like an iPhone but didn’t have the phone app. The iPod Touch was discontinued in 2022.
MacBook
The MacBook Pro 15-inch model was introduced in January 2006 and the 17-inch model was introduced in April. It replaced the PowerBook. It had four times the performance of the PowerBook G4. Then in May 2006 Apple introduced the MacBook. It replaced the iBook. The MacBook Air was released in January 2008. It was said to fit in a manila envelope. The first redesign to the MacBook Pro was the late 2008, 15 inch. The edges were curved more and the bezels went from white to black. The second redesign was the mid 2012, retina 15 inch. It was the same design, just thinner and had a retina display. The third redesign was in 2016. It introduced the touch bar which was on the keyboard in place of the function keys. In 2019, there was a physical escape key and separated touch id sensor on the Macbook. The fourth redesign was in 2021. It made the MacBook thicker again. It also introduced the notch. The Macbook Air had two redesigns. One changed the white bezels to black and two ading the notch. The regular macbook was redesigned from white bezels to black.
iPhone
The iPhone was introduced in 2007. It was the first multi-touch phone. The capacity options were 4, 8, 16 GB. The iPhone 3G was introduced in 2008. It was the first phone with 3G connectivity. The iPhone 3GS was introduced in 2009. It was the first iPhone able to take video. The s stood for speed. The iPhone 4 was introduced in 2010. It was the thinnest at that time. It was the first phone with a front camera. It did have a problem with the antena. The iPhone 4S was introduced in 2011. The s stood for siri. The iPhone 5 was introduced in 2012. It replaced the 30 pin connector with the 8 pin lightning connector. The iPhone 5C and 5S were introduced in 2013. The iPhone 5C was the same thing as the iPhone 5, just with a plastic back. The iPhone 5S introduced touch id. The home button had a touch id sensor built into it. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were introduced in 2014. The iPhone 6 was redesigned. For the first time, it introduced a plus version of it. It did have problems with bending. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus was introduced in 2015. It was the first phone with 3D touch. The iPhone SE was introduced in 2016. It was nearly identical to the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were introduced in 2016. The iPhone 7 Plus was the first iPhone with dual camera lens and with no audio jack. It was also the first water resistant iPhone. The iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X were released in 2017. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus introduced wireless charging. The iPhone X removed the physical home button and replaced it with a digital one. The iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR were introduced in 2018. The iPhone XS was the last phone with 3D touch. The iPhone XS and XS Max were the same thing as the iPhone X, just more advanced. The iPhone XR was cheaper than the XS, so it only had one camera lens and did not include 3D touch. The iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max were introduced in 2019. The iPhone 11 Pro was the first iPhone with a triple camera lens. The iPhone 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max were introduced in 2020. The iPhone 12 was redesigned like the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 12 supported Face ID with a mask on. The iPhone SE second generation was introduced in 2020. The screen was taken from the iPhone 8 and the camera was taken from the iPhone 7. The iPhone 13, mini, 13, 13 pro, and 13 pro max was introduced in 2021. The iPhone 13 notch was smaller than the 12. It also introduced cinematic mode. The mode was used to film movies. The iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max were introduced in 2022. Instead of making a mini, they made a plus size. The iPhone 14 Pro removed the notch and put a hole punch. Apple called this Dynamic Island. The iPhone SE third gen was also introduced in 2022. It had an updated processor. Apple has introduced 38 iPhone models as of 2022.
In conclusion, the iPod saved the music industry. People used to steal from songs copied from CDs and cassettes, but you could not copy a song on the iPod. Each song costed only 99¢ that made copying effort not worthwhile. In addition, the MacBook was more advanced than the PowerBook and the iBook. The iPhone replaced the need for a physical keyboard or stylus.
Chapter 4: 2010’s
In 2010, Apple introduced a multi touch tablet. It was basically a bigger iPhone. In 2015, Apple introduced the Apple Watch. In 2015, Apple introduced the Apple Pencil. It was a smart stylus.
iPad
The iPad was introduced in 2010. It was a tablet. It used the same software as the iPhone until iOS 13 when Apple introduced iPadOS 13. Apple introduced 10 generations of iPads. The first generation to the sixth generation had the screen size of 9.7 inch. The seventh generation to the ninth generation had a 10.2 inch screen. The tenth generation had a 10.9 inch display. In 2012, Apple introduced the iPad Mini. It was an iPad with a smaller screen. There are 6 generations of iPad Mini’s. The first gen to the fifth gen have a 7.9 inch display. The 6th gen has a 8.3 inch display. The iPad Mini (6th Generation) removed the physical home button. The iPad Air was announced in 2013. It was a lighter iPad. And has 5 generations. The iPad Pro was introduced in 2015. It was a thinner iPad and made for professionals. There have been 11 models so far.
Apple Watch
The Apple Watch was introduced in 2015. It was a smart watch. There have been 9 models as of 2022. The screen sizes are: first generation to Series 3 have a 38 mm or a 42 mm display. The Series 4 to Series 6, and SE 1 and SE 2 have a 40mm or a 44mm display. The Series 7 to 8 have a 41mm or 45 mm display. The Apple Watch Ultra has a 49mm display. The Series 1 was splash resistant. The Series 2 and later are water resistant for 50 meters. The Apple Watch Ultra is water resistant for 100 meters.
Apple Pencil
Apple introduced the Apple Pencil in 2015. It was like a real pen, except you could use it on an iPad. If you place it down, it would roll over to the side that says Apple pencil. The pencil charged if you plugged it into the lightning port on the iPad. The second gen was introduced in 2019. It didn’t roll. It had one flat side. It is attached at the top of the iPad.
The iPad was meant to be a tablet, but now, people use it as a computer. The Apple Watch did pretty much the same thing as your phone. The Apple Pencil is a Smart Stylus
Chapter 5: 2020’s
Apple introduced many innovations recently like the Mac Studio, a mid range desktop and Apple Silicone, their own chipset.
Apple Silicone
In 2020, Apple introduced its first ever computer chip called M1. They used this instead of the Intel i7 and i9. They used this chip in the MacBook Pro 13 Inch (2020, M1) and the MacBook Air ( 2020, M1). Also, the Mac Mini used M1. In 2021, they used the M1 with the iMac 24. In 2021, Apple used this chip in the iPad Pro (5th Generation). Later in the year, Apple introduced the M1 Pro and M1 Max. These chips were used in the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 inch. In 2022, Apple introduced the M1 Ultra which was used for the Mac Studio along with the M1 Max. Also, they used the M1 Chip in the iPad Air. At WWDC, Apple introduced the M2 in the MacBook Pro 13 inch and the MacBook Air. Later, in 2022, Apple used the M2 with the iPad Pro 6th gen. Instead of the M2 being more powerful than the M1 Ultra, it is more powerful than the M1.
Mac Studio
The Mac Studio was introduced in 2022. It is a computer that is more powerful than the Mac Mini and the iMac, but not as powerful as the Mac Pro. It is the only Apple computer with Apple’s most powerful chip. Apple also sells the Studio Display. It is cheaper than Apple’s Pro XDR Display. It is meant for a regular user and works with: MacBook Pro (2016 or later), MacBook Air (2018 or later), Mac Mini (2018 or later), iMac (2017 or later), iMac Pro (2017), Mac Pro (2019), Mac Studio (2022).
